Master of Ceremonies

Esther Lemus

Esther Lemus is the past Vice Mayor and first Latina ever elected to the Windsor Town Council.  She is also, proudly, one of the first of two Latinas ever elected as City Councilmembers in Sonoma County’s entire history.  She has served the community in numerous capacities, including as a former Deputy District Attorney with the Sonoma County District Attorney’s Office where she handled a range of criminal cases including domestic violence, sex crimes, DUI’s, and juvenile offenses, and was involved in and developed numerous youth crime prevention programs over the years.  Prior to her work as a D.A., Esther served as a federal prosecutor for the United States Department of Justice at the U.S. Attorney’s Offices in the Northern and Southern Districts of California.

Esther currently works as a Supervising Attorney for Legal Aid of Sonoma County where she provides much needed legal services to financially challenged families, individuals, the elderly, immigrants, and survivors of domestic violence, among others.  She is committed to promoting social justice and to advancing basic human rights for the vulnerable in our community.

Esther is a huge supporter of LifeWorks and the services that they provide to those in need of mental health support.  She is proud to return for her second year as Master of Ceremonies, and is especially excited to about this year’s Champion for Change award recipient, Santa Rosa Mayor Natalie Rogers!

2023 Champion for Change

Mayor Natalie Rogers

This award is given to leaders who have positively affected the lives of youth, families, and communities in Sonoma County. Champions have broken barriers and created pathways to access services, adapted resources and addressed community needs in an inclusive, thoughtful, and creative way.

This year we are honoring Santa Rosa Mayor, Natalie Rogers. Mayor Rogers is the first female African-American Mayor and the first female African-American Vice Mayor for the City of Santa Rosa. She was raised by a maintenance worker mother and an Operating Engineer Local 3 stepfather living in public housing. Natalie’s step-sister died by suicide when she was 13 years old and it changed the course of Natalie’s life. She has dedicated her career and education to helping people and serving the community. She earned her undergraduate degree from Sonoma State University and is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. Natalie is a mother of eight children, is very active in her children’s schools and her union, Engineers and Scientists of California Local 20. Natalie also volunteers her time with the North Bay Labor Council, works for a local health provider, and operates her own private counseling business. We are grateful for her dedication and barrier-breaking hard work!

In 2005, at the age of 22, Kevin attempted to take his own life by jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge. Eight years after his attempt Kevin was reunited with the officer who talked him back to safety. Since then, Kevin's story of HOPE has touched a diverse group of audiences all around the world. Kevin has had the opportunity to share his story with several magazine outlets along with local and national news stations.
